The Hundred Uses of Nails
- 6 week project

The Hundred Uses of Nails is a book I wrote, designed and illustrated with my own daughter as the intended audience. The book is designed with push, pull, slide, rotate and flap mechanisms full of fun and surprises for young readers aged 2-6 yrs old. I combined fun play with the educational purposes of the book to address personal hygiene for kids in a playful, colourful way. The “games” inherent to the book’s mechanisms could also train young children’s fine motor skills while enjoying the story full of lovable animal characters. A physical prototype of the book was distributed among 5 children which garnered great feedback. Sadly the book remains unpublished due to the cost of printing.

Process

This project contains illustration and design as its core tasks, with writing and ideation on the sideline. The work process started with storyboards and character interface, with many trials and errors, as well as obtaining feedback from children.

The high-fidelity prototype of the book was later created in digital formats using Illustrator.

Result

Although the book remains to be published due to cost issues, the prototype of the book brought joy and good parental interaction for at least 5 families, which is something I take pride in.
